Most people give it a day or two and rush off to see the country. That is a mistake. Yerevan is one of the most stunning and layered cities I have been to, so give it 4 to 5 days. Start with a coffee at one of the excellent specialty roasters (Set, Mart, Ground Zero, Surf), then walk: Saryan Street for a calm, mysterious Eastern vibe, Northern and Mashtots Avenue for big-city energy, the English Garden to cool off in the green.

The museums are special too. The Saryan Museum and the House of Parajanov are the kind of niche, artsy places you will not find in Europe or the US, and the modern art of the Cascade is unbeatable. The Armenian Genocide Museum, a short taxi from the centre, sits on the level of Europe’s great history museums. I have been twice and spent hours each time.

Armenia is small but it packs a lot in. There are no high-speed highways, but the roads are good and easy to drive, and a car runs about $50 a day. Five to seven days covers most of it. Beyond the classics of Garni, Geghard and the Symphony of Stones, my favourites are the quieter places.

Gyumri, the second city, is built from black tuff instead of Yerevan’s rose, which gives it a darker, mysterious feel, and you can still see traces of the 1988 earthquake. Dilijan and Stepanavan are a completely different, green Armenia of mountains, rivers and forest, where I like to rent an apartment for a few days and just unwind. Two hours from Yerevan there is also ROT-54, an abandoned Soviet observatory with giant radar dishes, built by the maverick physicist Paris Herouni. It feels frozen in time, with old engineering schematics still on the floor, and almost no one knows about it.

I worked from Armenia for months for my clients in the UK. Most coffee shops are happy for you to sit with a laptop and have good WiFi, and the mobile internet is strong enough that I usually just hotspot from my phone. The local providers, Team, Viva and Ucom, all work well and cost about $8 to 10 for unlimited data, and you can pick one up at the airport with just your passport.

You can pay by card almost everywhere, though I still keep about 20,000 dram (around $50) on me just in case. The prices will pleasantly surprise you: on a middling European salary I could eat at the best restaurant in Yerevan.

Taxis are very cheap, and the main app is Yandex, since Uber and Bolt do not operate here.

If you have some basic Russian, do not miss the niche architecture walks from Armenia Through Engineer’s Eyes, which tell the city’s history building by building. There is nothing comparable in English.

Many locals still speak Russian, but learn a few words of Armenian too, starting with hello. People really appreciate it.
