Best eSIM for India in 2026

A real review and setup guide for staying online across India.

Could one eSIM handle three weeks in India? That was the experiment. Delhi first, out to Jaipur for the forts, a flight down to Mumbai, and the last stretch working out of Bengaluru.

Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru gave me fast, dependable 4G almost everywhere, with the odd patch of 5G in the city centers. The eSIM rides on Vi, whose 5G rollout is still thin, so I treated LTE as the baseline and was rarely disappointed. Out on the highway to Jaipur and in the smaller towns it held 4G, slipping to 3G only on the emptiest stretches.

Map of my India route: Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

What I actually used it for

  • Booking an Uber straight out of Delhi airport late at night instead of queuing at the prepaid taxi desk.
  • Maps and offline navigation through Old Delhi, the forts in Jaipur, and Mumbai traffic.
  • Translating Hindi signs and menus, and checking train times on the IRCTC app.
  • Tethering the laptop for a week of work in Bengaluru, and video calls home in the evenings.

Pick your India eSIM plan

Every plan covers all of India on a top national network. Install before you fly, top up in the app any time.

Why travelers carry an eSIM in India

  • Skip the SIM paperwork

A local Indian SIM needs your passport, a photo, and KYC, and can take a day to switch on. Your eSIM works the minute you land.

  • Runs on a national network

We route through Vi (Vodafone Idea), one of India's big national networks, not a budget reseller.

  • Cheaper than roaming

Daily roaming rates in India outrun a whole eSIM plan within a day or two.

  • Keep your home number

Run both lines at once: home SIM for texts and bank logins, India eSIM for the internet.

  • Online the moment you land

Book an Uber or Ola and open maps at Delhi or Mumbai airport without hunting for WiFi.

  • One plan, the whole country

Solid signal across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, and on the long train routes in between.

Coverage in Delhi, Mumbai, and beyond

From Delhi outwards, this is what the signal actually looks like on the ground:

  • 4G LTE
    Delhi & the north
Fast LTE across the capital region, 5G in pockets
  • 4G LTE
    Mumbai & Maharashtra
Dependable LTE across the city and suburbs
  • 4G LTE
    Bengaluru & the south
Fast data across the tech capital
  • 4G*
    Jaipur, highways & small towns
Reliable LTE, slower on remote stretches

Vi (Vodafone Idea) covers the vast majority of India's population on 4G LTE, with 5G still limited to pockets of the big cities. On rural highways and in remote hill stations, expect the signal to drop to slower speeds for a while, the same as it does for any local SIM.

Before you fly: a ten-minute checklist

A short list worth doing on home WiFi, so nothing is left for the arrivals hall in Delhi:

  • Scan the QR code at home and make sure the India eSIM is visible in your settings before you pack.
  • Download offline Google Maps for Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and anywhere else you plan to visit.
  • Install Uber and Ola, the main ride-hailing apps in India, so a taxi is one tap away on arrival.
  • Save your accommodation address and screenshots of your bookings. Traffic and street names can be confusing.
  • A power bank earns its place in India. Maps running all day flatten a phone by mid-afternoon.

How to set up your India eSIM

The whole flow takes about two minutes. Do it on home WiFi before you fly and arrive in India already connected.

  1. 1

    Buy an India plan

Match the plan to your trip length. The India eSIM is delivered to your email and dashboard the moment you pay.

  2. 2

Scan the QR code at home

Scan the QR code from your dashboard on home WiFi. Your phone adds the India eSIM in about a minute, ready to switch on when you land.

  3. 3

Turn on Data Roaming when you land

Land in Delhi or Mumbai, switch Data Roaming on for the eSIM line, and you are online before you reach the baggage belt. This is the step most people miss.

  4. 4

Top up any time during your stay

Run low halfway through India? Buy more data in the app. It lands on the same eSIM with nothing to scan or reinstall.

Remember: after landing in Delhi, flip Data Roaming on for the eSIM line. That is expected behaviour for travel eSIMs, not a hidden charge.
