Vienna Airport to the City (2026-2027): How to Get There During the Rail Closure
From September 2026 to October 2027, the S7 and the City Airport Train no longer run straight into central Vienna because of major S-Bahn works. Here is a simple, up to date guide to every way in and out of the airport, in both directions written by a Vienna resident.
What changed, and when
From September 7, 2026 until the end of October 2027, a central part of Vienna's S-Bahn main line is closed.
The works change two things for airport travelers. First, the S7 airport train no longer reaches the city center. It now runs on a short route to St. Marx, which is outside the center. Second, the City Airport Train (CAT) uses replacement buses instead of the train for the whole period. These buses run between the airport and Wien Mitte / Landstrasse.
The good news: Many options are not affected at all. They run on the road, or on long-distance tracks outside the closed part. From around September 5, 2026 an extra bus also runs between Wien Praterstern and the airport. Dates and details can change during the works. Check the operator before you travel.
Airport transport at a glance
| Option | Where to board | Frequency | Journey time | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best route Railjet / REX train | Airport train station to Wien Hauptbahnhof | 2 per hour | 15-20 min | from EUR 4.40 |
CAT replacement bus | Airport to Wien Mitte / Landstrasse | every 12-15 min | 20-30 min (traffic) | check operator (train CAT was EUR 14.90) |
S7 to St. Marx + tram / bus | Airport to St. Marx, then tram 18/71 or bus 74A | S7 every 30 min | 30-40 min total | EUR 5.40 |
Vienna Airport Lines bus | Airport to Schwedenplatz / Hauptbahnhof / Westbahnhof | every 30 min | 20-40 min | EUR 11 single, EUR 20 return |
Taxi / private transfer | Airport taxi rank / pre-booked | on demand | 20-30 min | EUR 30-45 |
The figures are approximate. They can change during the 2026-2027 works. Confirm frequencies, times, and fares with the operator before you travel.
Getting FROM the airport into Vienna
You just landed at Vienna Airport (Flughafen Wien). Here are the current ways into town. They go from cheapest to most comfortable.

Long-distance train (Railjet / REX) to Wien Hauptbahnhof
Cost: from around 4.40 EUR one way
Time: 15-20 minutes to Wien Hauptbahnhof
Where: Follow the signs to the train platforms below the terminal (the OBB level).
This is the option I pick. Railjet and REX trains run on the main long-distance line, not the closed S-Bahn part. So the works do not affect them. They run about twice an hour, so wait time is short. Board at the airport station under the terminal; lifts and level access make it easy with bags. At Wien Hauptbahnhof, change to the U1 metro straight into the center. Fares start from about 4.40 EUR, the cheapest fast route.
Is your hotel anywhere central? Take the Railjet or REX to Wien Hauptbahnhof, then the U1. It is the cheapest fast option. The works do not touch it. Choose a taxi or transfer if you are tired, heavy with bags, or going somewhere the trains do not reach easily.

CAT replacement bus to Wien Mitte / Landstrasse
Cost: 14.90 EUR single, 24.90 EUR return, or 7 EUR single with a Vienna pass or KlimaTicket
Time: 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic (the old train took 16)
Where: Board at the CAT bus stop outside the terminal. It drops you at Wien Mitte / Landstrasse, near The Mall.
The CAT now runs as premium replacement buses instead of the train. Buses go about every 12 to 15 minutes through the day. They stop right at Wien Mitte / Landstrasse, with U3 and U4 connections and lift access.
The buses are low floor and take luggage well. They keep the CAT fare: 14.90 EUR single or 24.90 EUR return, or just 7 EUR single with a Vienna annual pass or KlimaTicket. The train to Hauptbahnhof is usually faster and cheaper, so pick the CAT bus only if Wien Mitte is your goal.

S7 airport train to St. Marx, then tram or bus
Cost: around 5.40 EUR one way (plus your onward city ticket if not covered)
Time: 30-40 minutes in total, including the change at St. Marx
Where: Board the S7 on the OBB level. Ride to St. Marx. Then change to tram 18 or 71, or bus 74A toward Landstrasse.
The S7 is cheap, from about 5.40 EUR. But during the works it terminates at St. Marx, outside the center. There you must change to tram 18 or 71, or bus 74A toward Landstrasse, to finish the trip.
The St. Marx change has steps and is awkward with heavy bags. Trams are low floor, but the platform swap still takes time. Pick this only if you are happy with a connection and a local map.

Vienna Airport Lines bus (Postbus)
Cost: around 11 EUR one way, around 20 EUR return
Time: 20 minutes to Schwedenplatz, 40 minutes via Hauptbahnhof to Westbahnhof
Where: Board the airport buses outside the arrivals hall. One line goes to Schwedenplatz / Morzinplatz. One line goes via Hauptbahnhof to Westbahnhof. One line goes to the Donaustadt / Kagran side.
The Vienna Airport Lines coaches run on the road. So the rail closure does not affect them. One line goes to Schwedenplatz / Morzinplatz, one runs via Hauptbahnhof to Westbahnhof, and one serves Donaustadt / Kagran. They are handy if a stop is near your hotel.
Fares are about 11 EUR single or 20 EUR return, and the coaches carry luggage in a hold. From around September 5, 2026 a bus also runs between the airport and Wien Praterstern.

Taxi or private transfer
Cost: around 37 to 45 EUR, or a fixed airport fare from about 37 EUR if you pre-book
Time: 20-30 minutes depending on traffic
Where: Taxi rank right outside arrivals, or pre-book ahead.
The easiest choice after a long flight or with luggage and kids. Order a ride in an app like FREENOW, Uber or Bolt, or phone a local radio taxi: Taxi 31300 on +43 1 31300 or Taxi 40100 on +43 1 40100 (both have apps too).
A pre-booked local taxi is often cheaper and more predictable than the meter or a surge app. Taxi 31300 has a fixed airport fare around 37 EUR for up to 4 people, and Taxi 40100 around 42 EUR if you ask for the airport tariff (Flughafentarif).

Car sharing (drive yourself)
Cost: From 0.50 EUR per minute, or 9.99 EUR per hour, plus a 12.99 EUR airport fee. Fuel, charging and the vignette are included.
Time: 20-30 minutes to the center, depending on traffic
Where: Free2Move has cars at the airport, in car park P3 on level 0. The station based options are in the city, not at the airport.
Several car sharing providers operate in Vienna: Free2Move, sharetoo, and OBB Rail and Drive. The only one with cars at the airport is Free2Move. If you do not have an account with them, create it and submit your driver's licence several days in advance, because approval takes time.
To rent a Free2Move car, head to car park P3, level 0. The car already has the digital motorway vignette for the A4, plus fuel or charging, so you pay only for your time. On top of the per-minute driving price, from about 0.50 EUR per minute, you pay a 12.99 EUR airport fee for the pickup.
In the city you can end the trip and leave the car in a normal short stay parking zone (Kurzparkzone), as long as you stop inside the provider home area. The station based options, sharetoo and OBB Rail and Drive, need a return to their station, so they suit a round trip, not a one way ride.

Getting TO the airport from Vienna
You are flying out. Here are the same options in reverse. Each one shows where to board in the city and how much buffer to leave.

Long-distance train (Railjet / REX) from Wien Hauptbahnhof
Cost: from around 4.40 EUR one way
Time: 15-20 minutes
Where: Board at Wien Hauptbahnhof (reachable on the U1). Watch the board for the airport (Flughafen Wien) departure.
This is the most reliable way out during the works. Railjet and REX trains run about twice an hour, and the closure does not affect them. Start from Wien Hauptbahnhof, not the center. Take the U1 to Hauptbahnhof first, then board the airport train there. Do not try to catch an airport train on the closed S-Bahn line.
Leave around 15 minutes of buffer at Hauptbahnhof to find the platform and buy tickets.

CAT replacement bus from Wien Mitte / Landstrasse
Cost: 14.90 EUR single, 24.90 EUR return, or 7 EUR single with a Vienna pass or KlimaTicket
Time: 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic
Where: Board near Wien Mitte / Landstrasse (The Mall, Marxergasse side).
This is convenient if you are already near Wien Mitte / Landstrasse. Board the CAT replacement bus there, with easy U3 and U4 access and lift entry. But it is now a bus in city traffic, so the time is less sure than the old train. Leave a bigger buffer, 20-30 minutes extra at busy hours. It costs 14.90 EUR single or 24.90 EUR return, or 7 EUR with a Vienna pass or KlimaTicket. Choose this only if the stop is right by you.

S7 from St. Marx (with a change)
Cost: around 5.40 EUR one way plus your city ticket
Time: 30-40 minutes in total, including the change
Where: Get to St. Marx first (tram 18 or 71, or bus 74A). Then take the S7 out to the airport.
This is the cheapest on paper, from about 5.40 EUR. But the S7 starts from St. Marx during the works, so you first reach it by tram 18 or 71, or bus 74A. The change at St. Marx has steps and is hard with luggage. This route is slow, so leave extra time for the departure. Pick this only if you know the route well and travel light.

Vienna Airport Lines bus (Postbus)
Cost: around 11 EUR one way, around 20 EUR return
Time: 20-40 minutes depending on the stop
Where: Board at Schwedenplatz / Morzinplatz, Wien Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof, or the Donaustadt stop, depending on the line.
The Vienna Airport Lines coaches run on the road, so the works do not affect them. They are often the simplest single ride if a stop is near you, with luggage held below. Board at Schwedenplatz / Morzinplatz, at Westbahnhof via Hauptbahnhof, or on the Kagran line.
Fares are about 11 EUR single or 20 EUR return. Allow buffer for road traffic on the way out. From around September 5, 2026 a bus also runs from Wien Praterstern.

Taxi or private transfer
Cost: around 37 to 45 EUR, or a fixed airport fare from about 37 EUR if you pre-book
Time: 20-30 minutes in normal traffic
Where: Book ahead or take one from a rank, and say Flughafen Wien.
The safest choice if you are short on time or leaving very early. Order a ride in an app like FREENOW, Uber or Bolt, or pre-book a fixed price to avoid surprises. You can phone a local radio taxi: Taxi 31300 on +43 1 31300 or Taxi 40100 on +43 1 40100 (both have apps).
Their fixed airport fares (around 37 EUR with Taxi 31300, around 42 EUR with Taxi 40100 if you ask for the Flughafentarif) are often cheaper and more predictable than the meter or a surge app.

Car sharing (drive yourself)
Cost: From 0.50 EUR per minute, or 9.99 EUR per hour, plus a 12.99 EUR airport fee. Fuel, charging and the vignette are included.
Time: 20-30 minutes to the airport, depending on traffic
Where: Pick up a free floating car in the city, then drop it at the airport in car park P3, level 0. The station based options must go back to their station.
Several car sharing providers operate in Vienna: Free2Move, sharetoo, and OBB Rail and Drive. Only Free2Move lets you drop the car at the airport. Set up your account and submit your driver's licence several days before your flight, because approval takes time.
Pick up a Free2Move car near you in the city, then end the trip at the airport in car park P3, level 0. The car already has the digital motorway vignette for the A4, plus fuel or charging, so you pay only for your time. On top of the per-minute driving price, from about 0.50 EUR per minute, you pay a 12.99 EUR airport fee for the drop off.
Start the car inside the provider home area. The station based options, sharetoo and OBB Rail and Drive, need a return to their station, so they do not work for a one way trip to the airport.

Quick tips during the works
- Buy tickets in advance where you can. This helps most for the airport buses and long-distance trains. You skip the queues.
- Leave extra time. Bus replacement can bring traffic delays. Add a buffer you did not need before.
- Check live departures on your phone (OBB and Wiener Linien apps). Routes and times can change during the works.
- In doubt? Start or end at Wien Hauptbahnhof. The long-distance trains there are the least affected by the closure.

Frequently asked questions
Is the S7 to Vienna city center running in 2026?
It does not go all the way into the center. From September 7, 2026 until the end of October 2027, the S7 runs on a short route from the airport to St. Marx. St. Marx is outside the center. To finish the trip, change to tram 18 or 71, or bus 74A toward Landstrasse. For a direct ride, the long-distance trains to Wien Hauptbahnhof are easier.
How do I get from Vienna Airport to the city during the rail closure?
The simplest option is a Railjet or REX train from the airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof, then the U1 metro. The train takes 15-20 minutes and costs from about 4.40 EUR. You can also take the CAT replacement bus to Wien Mitte, a Vienna Airport Lines bus to a city stop, or a taxi or transfer door to door. The S7 still runs, but only as far as St. Marx, so it needs a change.
How long does the airport bus take?
It depends on the line and on traffic. The Vienna Airport Lines bus takes around 20 minutes to Schwedenplatz. It takes about 40 minutes via Hauptbahnhof to Westbahnhof. The CAT replacement bus to Wien Mitte takes longer than the old 16 minute train, because it now runs on the road. So check live times and leave a buffer.
What is the cheapest way from Vienna Airport to the center?
The S7 train has the cheapest fare, at around 5.40 EUR. But during the works it only reaches St. Marx and needs a change. The long-distance train to Wien Hauptbahnhof is often the best value overall, from around 4.40 EUR. It is fast and goes into the center with no connection.
How much time should I leave to get to Vienna Airport?
During the 2026-2027 works, leave more time than usual. Be at Wien Hauptbahnhof or on your airport bus at least 2.5 to 3 hours before a short-haul flight. Leave more for long-haul or busy days. The train from Hauptbahnhof is the most predictable leg. Use it if you are short on time.
How much buffer should I save?
The CAT and S7 into the center are disrupted. Several options now run as buses in traffic. So leave more time than before. As a rule, be at a train departure point (Hauptbahnhof) or on a bus at least 2.5 to 3 hours before a short-haul flight. Leave more for long-haul or busy travel days. The train from Hauptbahnhof is the most predictable leg, so you can leave a bit less if you use it.
Do I need a ticket for the replacement bus?
Yes. You need a valid ticket for the CAT replacement bus, a Vienna Airport Lines bus, or a train. Have it before or as you board. Buy in advance online or at the airport machines to save time. Check the operator for the current fare, because some prices may change during the works.
