How much data does a Wiesn day actually burn?
Here is the realistic math for one full festival day, so the plan sizes above are numbers rather than guesses:
| Offline map of Munich (one-time download) | ~50 MB |
| Group chat running all day | ~100 MB |
| 30 photos shared to the family chat | ~150 MB |
| 15 minutes of video calls home | ~200 MB |
| A few reels or stories uploaded from the tent | ~300 MB |
| A heavy Wiesn day, all in | ~0.8 to 1 GB |
That is why 3 GB comfortably covers a fest weekend and 5 to 10 GB covers a week with day trips. Streaming video or working remotely? Size up, or just top up in the app when you run low.

Do you even need an eSIM for Oktoberfest?
Honest answer: it depends on where you are flying from. Here is the breakdown, including the case where you should keep your money.
- Flying in from the EU: you do not need us. Your home plan roams in Germany at no extra cost under EU roam like at home rules. Enjoy the fest.
- From the US or Canada: carrier day passes run 10 to 12 dollars per day. One day of roaming costs about twice our 5 GB plan, and a two-week trip costs more than ten times it.
- From the UK or Switzerland: many plans reintroduced EU roaming fees or tight caps after Brexit. Check yours; if roaming is billed per day or capped at a few hundred MB, an eSIM wins.
- From Australia or Asia: roaming packs are typically expensive and skimpy on data. A local-rate eSIM is the standard move.

Fair note: if you specifically want unlimited data, Holafly's unlimited plans fit better. For everyone else, paying per GB with free hotspot comes out far cheaper for a fest trip, and you can top up in the app if you run out.
Surviving six million visitors
Oktoberfest entry is free and there are no tickets, but six million people over 16 days means the network at the Wiesn gets hammered. A few things to sort out before your first Maß:
- Set a meeting point first: phones die and tents swallow people. Agree where to regroup before you enter, then use group chat while you still have battery.
- Have your reservation ready: tents check table reservations from your phone. Load it before you arrive, and keep data on in case the email needs to refresh.
- Download offline maps: cached maps of Munich keep working even when the network around the grounds is at its busiest.
- Card works, carry some cash: tents and big stalls take cards, but carousels and some stands are still cash-only.
- Hotspot the table: one plan can feed your whole group's phones while you wait for the band, no daily hotspot cap.
- Know the exit plan: the U-Bahn station Theresienwiese is closed temporarily for crowd control at peak times. Locals walk to Goetheplatz or Schwanthalerhöhe instead, or take the 15-minute walk to the main station. Offline maps make that painless.
Tent table reservations are shown from your phone, and your group will coordinate over chat all day. The one upgrade that fixes both: working data the moment you walk onto the grounds.

How to set up your Oktoberfest eSIM
The whole flow takes about two minutes. Do it on home WiFi before you fly and land in Munich already connected.
- 1
Get your eSIM email

Right after checkout you receive a “Your eSIM is Ready” email with your Germany plan.
- 2
Open your dashboard

Create a new eSIM or activate on an existing one.
- 3
Scan the QR code

Scan the QR code with your phone, or tap the link on mobile.
- 4
Let your iPhone set it up

Your iPhone adds the eSIM and starts “Setting Up Mobile Service”.
- 5
Wait for it to connect

The new line shows “Connecting to network” and then “Ready”. Traffic starts flowing once you land in Germany.
- 6
Turn on Data Roaming

Open the eSIMPal line in Settings and switch Data Roaming on. This is required for the eSIM to work and has no extra cost.
Tip: install on home WiFi before you fly. On landing, switch on Data Roaming. It's required for travel eSIMs and doesn't cost you anything extra.
