Question 1

What is an eSIM?

Accepted Answer

A SIM card built into your phone. Instead of inserting plastic, you scan a QR code and a new line appears in settings. Your physical SIM keeps working alongside it.

Question 2

How do I check eSIM support in settings?

Accepted Answer

iPhone: Settings, Cellular, and look for "Add eSIM". Android: Settings, Network, SIM manager, and look for "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM instead". If the option is there, your phone supports eSIM.

Question 3

My phone is from a carrier. Will a travel eSIM work?

Accepted Answer

Only if the phone is unlocked. A carrier-locked phone rejects other operators' SIMs, including travel eSIMs. Most carriers unlock a paid-off phone on request, so check your lock status before the trip.

Question 4

Why do phones from mainland China have no eSIM?

Accepted Answer

Regulation: eSIM for phones was not approved there until recently, so Chinese-market units ship without it even when the global version has it. The same iPhone or Xiaomi bought in Europe supports eSIM; its mainland China twin does not.

Question 5

My phone is not in the list. What now?

Accepted Answer

Do the settings check above. The list covers the models travelers ask about most, and new phones launch every month. If settings show "Add eSIM", the checker verdict does not matter, your phone is ready.
