How to book as a foreigner
Uzbekistan Railways sells tickets on its own site and app. The address most guides give, eticket.railway.uz, now redirects to eticket.uzrailpass.uz.
- 1Open eticket.uzrailpass.uz and switch the language to English in the top corner.
- 2Create an account and sign in.
- 3Enter the stations and date. The fast train is labelled Jaloliddin Manguberdi, numbers 752 and 754 to Khiva, 751 and 753 back.
- 4Pick a class and seat, then enter each passenger's name and passport number exactly as in the passport.
- 5Pay by card and keep the e-ticket on your phone. Bring the same passport to the station.
Travelers report that foreign Visa and Mastercard cards work on the site (Seat61). We did not test a payment in this check. If your card is declined, try a second card or buy at a station ticket office with your passport.
On 12 October 2026 the fast train had seats on sale up to 30 October, about 18 days ahead, while night trains were on sale into mid-December. Check daily once your date is about three weeks away.
Stations in Uzbekistan check tickets and bags at the entrance, and may ask for your passport. Arrive at least 30 minutes early.
Bukhara to Khiva by train
This is the leg most travelers ask about, because the slower trains take six and a half hours and pass Bukhara at dawn. The fast train does Bukhara to Khiva in 3 hours 28 minutes.
It leaves Bukhara at 11:14 every day and arrives in Khiva at 14:42. Economy costs 332,000 soums (about $28) and Business 490,000 (about $41).
On Thursdays and Saturdays the second train leaves Bukhara at 15:47 and arrives at 19:51. Going back, trains leave Khiva at 07:10 daily and at 11:00 on Fridays and Sundays, reaching Bukhara at 10:38 and 15:15.
Two overnight trains from Tashkent pass Bukhara early in the morning on most days, at 05:32 and 06:48, and reach Khiva at 12:05 and 13:26. A bunk in an open-plan sleeper costs 157,100 soums (about $13) and a berth in a four-berth compartment 210,660 (about $18).
Stations: Urgench vs Khiva, and where trains leave from
Khiva has its own station, a little over a kilometer east of the Itchan Kala walls. It is a short taxi ride or a walk of 20 to 30 minutes to the old town.
Urgench is the regional capital about 35 km from Khiva and has the airport. Unless you are flying or staying in Urgench, book your train ticket to Khiva, not Urgench. The fast train covers the last stretch in 20 minutes for 50,000 soums.
In Tashkent the fast train uses Tashkent Central, also called the North station (Severny). The night trains to Khiva leave from Tashkent South (Yuzhny), a different station across town.
Bukhara's station is in the town of Kagan, 12 to 15 km from the old town depending on the source. Allow time and taxi fare for that transfer on both ends of a Bukhara stop.
Alternatives: night train and flight to Urgench
If the fast train is sold out, the night train is the fallback. It also saves a hotel night.
Night train from Tashkent South
Train 056 leaves Tashkent South at 21:45 and reaches Khiva at 12:05 the next day, 14 hours 20 minutes. Train 125 leaves at 22:35 and arrives at 13:26. Neither runs every day: on the dates we checked there was no night train to Khiva on Thursdays or Sundays.
Night train fares
Tashkent to Khiva costs 245,140 soums (about $21) in an open-plan sleeper, 348,550 (about $29) in a four-berth compartment and 640,390 (about $54) in a two-berth compartment. That is less than half the Economy fare on the fast train.
Flight to Urgench
Uzbekistan Airways flies between Tashkent and Urgench (UGC), reported at about an hour and a half in the air. Urgench airport is about 35 km from Khiva by taxi. We did not check flight schedules or fares for this guide, so look them up on the airline's site.
How it fits a Silk Road route with Afrosiyob
The classic route is Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva. Afrosiyob high-speed trains cover the first three cities, and the new train adds Khiva to the same fast line.
A simple plan: Afrosiyob from Tashkent to Samarkand (2 hours 13 minutes, 311,000 soums in Economy), Afrosiyob from Samarkand to Bukhara (about 1 hour 40 minutes, 225,000 soums), then the Jaloliddin Manguberdi from Bukhara to Khiva.
From Khiva you can return to Tashkent in one go on the 07:10 train, or fly out of Urgench. Afrosiyob trains do not go beyond Bukhara.
Afrosiyob seats sell out as fast as the Khiva train: on 12 October most departures for the following weekend showed no seats. Fix the train dates first and book hotels around them.
Mobile data on the way
Your e-ticket, the booking site and taxi apps in each city all need a working connection. Uzbekistan is outside EU roaming rules, so a European plan bills it as international roaming.
The line between Bukhara and Urgench crosses the Kyzylkum desert for hours. Save your ticket as a PDF or screenshot before boarding and do not count on a steady signal there.
An eSIM for Uzbekistan installed before the flight works from the moment you land in Tashkent, with no SIM counter and a fixed price.
